Yogyakarta. In Yogyakarta, young people are being urged to move away from political apathy and become actively involved in politics — including via social media platforms. This is the message from Novita Mawar Sharon, a member of the A Commission of the Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah Kota Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta City Legislative Council).
She pointed out that many young people still view politics as rigid and distant, which contributes to their reluctance to participate. In an era where digital connectivity is commonplace, Novita emphasised the importance of using social media to bring politics closer to the younger generation.
“In this digital era we have social media to invite young people to see our performance in government and politics so they are willing to take part in politics. Politics here doesn’t always mean being part of government, but politically active in one’s own life also counts.” she said.
Novita explained her motivation for entering politics was a desire for direct contribution so that young people are not merely spectators but can take an active role. She encouraged using informal and creative venues — such as social media or social-collaboration activities — rather than strictly formal settings to engage young people.
“If we use formal spaces, they’re difficult for them. So it must be in their way and in their language to be better accepted.” she remarked.
Novita also underscored that her social media activity is not just for style or appearance but carries meaningful messages and authentic content.
“I use social media not merely to appear stylish, but there is a message and substance I must deliver there. I try to be as I am, not contrived, honest.” she said.
Further, she encouraged the Yogyakarta City Council to leverage digital platforms for their members’ activities, meetings, and policy discussions so that the public, especially young people, can follow along.
Lastly, Novita reminded young people to use social media wisely, since information spreads quickly and can go viral. She warned against treating social media as a space for hoaxes, mistakes or bullying.
