Yogyakarta. On October 30, 2025, GKR Hemas, Deputy Chairperson of Indonesia’s Regional Representative Council (DPD RI), launched her newest book, “Strengthening the Authority of the DPD RI: Realising Regional Autonomy Towards Indonesia Golden 2045”, at the Convention Hall on the first floor of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta.
The book chronicles her long journey, reflections, and commitment in her role overseeing regional autonomy, political, and legal matters. She emphasizes the crucial role of the DPD RI as a strategic representative institution for regions, aiming to achieve just and equitable development for an “Indonesia Emas 2045” (Golden Indonesia in 2045).
Distinguished Audience and Symbolic Venue
The launch event drew high-profile guests, including the Chair of the DPD RI, Sultan B. Najamuddin; the Deputy Chair of the PKK DIY (Family Welfare Movement) GKBRAA Paku Alam; the Assistant for Government and Public Welfare from the Yogyakarta provincial administration, Aria Nugrahadi; and the Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Prof. Noorhaidi Hasan. Also present were regional leaders, academics, cultural figures, and students from various universities.
Talkshow on the Future of Regional Representation
The event also featured a talk show titled “Strengthening the Role of the DPD RI and the Future of Regional Autonomy.” Speakers included the book’s editor Ajiep Padindang, constitutional law expert Andi Irmanputra Sidin, Rector Noorhaidi Hasan, and Bawaslu (Election Supervisory Agency) member Lolly Suhenty. The session was moderated by Widihasto Wasana Putra.
A Book of Ideas, Not Just Memoir
In her keynote speech, GKR Hemas made clear that the book is more than a personal biography. Rather, it is a collection of her thoughts, experiences, and reflections on her struggle to guard regional interests at the national level. She stated:
“This book is a documentation of a journey as well as a fighting spirit to preserve the dignity of regional representation. I hope it inspires anyone who cares about the future of regional autonomy and development justice.”
She also underscored that strengthening the DPD RI demands consistency, firmness, and collective commitment so that the institution can truly act as a balancing power in Indonesia’s constitutional system. For her, regional autonomy is not merely an administrative division of power — it is a real expression of people’s sovereignty at the local level.
She added that holding the launch in Yogyakarta carries symbolic meaning: the special region (DIY) reflects local wisdom and exemplary values in nation-building. According to her, this local wisdom forms a strong foundation for creating a just and sustainable Indonesia.
Praise from National Leaders
Sultan B. Najamuddin, Chair of the DPD RI, praised the book as a vital intellectual and moral contribution to the DPD’s mission amid the dynamics of national politics. He said:
“This book proves that political struggle can emerge from clear thinking and sincere service. What GKR Hemas does is a moral example for the fight of regional representation.”
Rector Noorhaidi Hasan also commended the work, noting that it effectively captures the evolving role of the DPD since the reform era. He emphasized that the book underscores the importance of strengthening relations between central and regional governments in a socially just framework.
Focus on Autonomy and the Road to 2045
The book specifically examines the journey to reinforce the DPD RI’s power, with a special focus on regional autonomy, including special autonomy and the unique status of Yogyakarta (DIY). It also addresses the challenges laying ahead as Indonesia aims for its “Golden 2045” vision.
GKR Hemas expressed hope that this book launch will spark renewed momentum in regional advocacy — encouraging persistent efforts to strengthen the DPD as a frontline defender of a sovereign, empowered, and just Indonesia.
