Mangenta Festival: Barito Timur’s Living Culinary Legacy

Barito Timur. In Tamiang Layang, Barito Timur, the Mangenta Festival has become a powerful symbol of communal unity and gratitude. In the Maanyan language, Mangenta means “making and enjoying kenta,” a customary sticky rice dish deeply rooted in local tradition. The Barito Timur Regency Government, through its Department of Culture, Tourism, Youth, and Sports (Disbudparpora), organized this year’s traditional food festival on October 30 at the Nansarunai Green Open Space.

The festival was open to the public and featured six competing groups from different sub-districts: Paku, Dusun Tengah, two teams from Dusun Timur, Benua Lima, and Awang. Each group, composed of three members, showcased their creativity and local wisdom by preparing kenta — sticky rice delicacies — in unique, culturally inspired ways.

The event was officially inaugurated by Dra. Herawani, MM, head of Disbudparpora Barito Timur, and attended by regional officials, sub-district heads, judges, participants, journalists, and invited guests.

In her report, Eva Silviany Adianty (ST, MT), the Secretary of Disbudparpora, emphasized that the festival aims to raise public awareness about the importance of preserving traditional culinary heritage. “Through this event, we want to strengthen Barito Timur’s tourism appeal by showcasing the region’s rich cultural heritage, while positioning Barito Timur as a destination for traditional culinary tourism,” she said.

Herawani added that the festival is more than just a competition — it is a genuine expression of love for local culture. “This event reflects the cultural richness and tourist charm of Barito Timur. Our commitment is to continuously advance the creative economy, especially in the traditional culinary sector,” she affirmed.

The 2025 Mangenta Festival results are as follows:

  • Taste category
    1st place – Benua Lima sub-district
    2nd place – Paku sub-district
    3rd place – Awang sub-district
  • Presentation category
    1st place – Dusun Tengah sub-district
2nd place – Dusun Timur (KKJJ group)
    3rd place – Dusun Timur

By hosting the Mangenta Festival, the Barito Timur Government hopes that this culinary tradition will continue to flourish — inspiring younger generations and strengthening social bonds across different communities. More than just a contest, the festival is a space for collaboration and solidarity, driving the rise of traditional Barito Timur cuisine on a broader stage.
