Yogyakarta. The city of Yogyakarta is stepping up efforts to become a truly inclusive destination by developing senior-friendly tourism, according to a recent study from the Vocational School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM).
The research highlights that Yogyakarta has strong potential in the senior tourism segment, thanks to its rich cultural and historical attractions. Yet, it also finds that many primary destinations in the region still lack adequate facilities and services for older travellers. Among the sites mentioned: Museum Sonobudoyo, Benteng Vredeburg and Monumen Jogja Kembali.
Key Areas for Improvement
The UGM study outlines three main areas needing strengthening:
- Physical accessibility: Many destinations still require improvements such as gentle ramps, wheelchair-friendly paths, sufficient seating, and toilets designed for senior visitors.
- Social-emotional service: While staff are generally friendly and cooperative, they often lack specialized training in serving older visitors.
- Policy & support: Some destinations already offer senior discounts, but a comprehensive regional strategy and integrated policy for senior tourism are not yet fully in place.
Aligning with Sustainability Goals
The push for senior-friendly tourism parallels global development agendas: it aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as Good Health & Well-Being (SDG 3), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10) and Sustainable Cities & Communities (SDG 11).
By creating accessible, safe, and welcoming experiences for older people, Yogyakarta is not only improving quality of life but also advancing social inclusion and reinforcing age-friendly public spaces.
Proposed Model for Senior Travel
The study recommends a model of tourism experience tailored for older adults, combining culture, leisurely pace, and wellness. Suggested features include:
- Slow-paced museum tours
- Arts & craft workshops
- City tours designed for seniors
- Wellness programmes such as senior-friendly exercise or music therapy
This approach is aimed at offering meaningful, healthy and human-centred travel experiences for older visitors.
Collaboration is Key
Realising senior-friendly tourism in Yogyakarta will require strong cooperation between multiple stakeholders: local government, tourism destination operators, industry players, local communities, and older adult visitor groups.
With enhanced policy frameworks, upgraded infrastructure and dedicated travel packages for seniors, Yogyakarta has the potential to become a national benchmark for inclusive and sustainable tourism — reinforcing its image as a cultural destination for all ages.
