Ndas Maling, Semarang's Traditional Culinary with a Unique Philosophy

Semarang. The city of Semarang, Central Java (Jateng) boasts a variety of popular traditional culinary delights . However, one of Semarang’s signature cakes, Ndas Maling , holds a unique philosophy behind its deliciousness.

This traditional cake originates from Kudu Village, Genuk District, Semarang. Its unique name is apparently derived from a folk tale surrounding the sacred tomb of Mbah Senari. The philosophy behind Ndas Maling is the hope of banishing negative aspects of life while remembering the goodness of one’s ancestors.

Previously, this cake could only be found once a year, specifically during the month of Muharram. However, now the cake has developed into a Semarang specialty. Kue Ndas Maling has a rough texture with a sweet and sticky taste. Everyone who eats it will immediately be transported to the past.

“(This cake) is being repopularized with various innovations and variations. (The hope) is that this cake will be known again by the community by continuing to utilize local foods,” said the Secretary of the Semarang Food Security Agency, Eko Yuniarto, as quoted by Selamat Pagi Indonesia, Metro TV, Saturday, September 27, 2025.
