The Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology is Encouraging a National Healthcare Industry Ecosystem for Personal Medical Implant Technology.

Jakarta. The Director General of Research and Development of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, M. Fauzan Adziman, delivered a keynote speech at the “Personalized Medical Implant Workshop” held by the University of Indonesia and The University of Melbourne at the University of Indonesia Interdisciplinary Engineering Building in Depok on Tuesday (30/09).

This workshop brought together domestic and international experts to discuss the opportunities and challenges of developing personalized medical implant technology tailored to individual patient needs. This initiative is part of an effort to strengthen the national manufacturing network based on research and innovation, thereby increasing Indonesia’s independence in healthcare technology.

Also present were a number of experts, including Prof. Yudan Whulanza and Prof. Sugeng Supriadi (University of Indonesia), Dr. Ir. Sandro Mihradi (Bandung Institute of Technology), and Prof. Peter Lee and Prof. David Ackland (The University of Melbourne), along with medical practitioners from UI, Hasan Sadikin Hospital, RSUI, and industrial partners.

In his presentation, Director General Fauzan explained that the interrelationship between fields in science and technology opens up many opportunities for the birth of various innovations.

“Health research products can essentially be developed across various disciplines. Even materials research in the aerospace or automotive sectors can be adapted to produce innovations relevant to medical needs,” said Director General Fauzan.

In a panel discussion themed Establishing a National Advanced Manufacturing Network for Personalized Implant Technology, Director General Fauzan stated that the Ministry of Education and Science and Technology is ready to support the development of the national health technology industry.

“The Ministry of Education and Science and Technology has prepared strategic programs and research funding schemes to strengthen the science and technology ecosystem, particularly in the health sector, which has a real impact on society,” he said.

Furthermore, Director General Fauzan emphasized that strengthening talent development (HRD) is an important factor in developing a competitive and sustainable national health industry.

In his keynote speech, Dr. Jeffri Ardiiyanto, Director of Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Resilience at the Ministry of Health, emphasized the crucial transformation strategy in the health sector.

“One important strategy in transforming the health security system is to increase the resilience of the pharmaceutical and medical device sector, such as vaccines, medicines, and medical devices, both in terms of quantity and value,” said Dr. Jeffri.

Meanwhile, Prof. Hamdi Muluk, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation at the University of Indonesia, highlighted the paradigm shift in modern society:

“Today’s societal needs demand personalization in everything. We hope this workshop, which we are co-organizing with UI, ITB, and the University of Melbourne, will inspire young doctors and academics to bring personalized medicine innovations from the laboratory to industry and clinics,” he said.

From the international partner perspective, Prof. Shanika Karunasekera from The University of Melbourne expressed her appreciation for this research collaboration:

“This is the kind of partnership we aspire to, a collaboration that not only generates knowledge but also delivers real solutions for the community,” said Shanika.

By bringing together expertise from engineering, medicine, and industry, this activity is expected to strengthen the national roadmap for developing innovative, safe, and affordable medical implant technology.
