Women in Jogja Take to the Streets, Carrying Pots, to Protest MBG

Yogyakarta. A number of mothers in Yogyakarta took to the streets to protest the Free Nutritious Meals program (MBG) at the UGM Roundabout on Friday (26/9). What is unique about this action is that the mothers bring cooking equipment in the form of pans. They voiced concerns regarding the increasing number of cases of students being poisoned after eating MBG program food.

In addition, they highlighted the trillion rupiah budget for the MBG program which actually raised concerns for parents and students. Wasingatu protester Zakiyah said the movement arose from the same concerns of parents.  “We cannot remain silent. We, the mothers, will be at the forefront of this issue,” said the Director of the Caksana Institute.

According to him, the MBG program takes up a very large budget, but still has many shortcomings. “This must be stopped first. Don’t sacrifice the budget and the nation’s children for political promises,” he said.
