Xiangqi (Elephant Chess) Debuts in Yogyakarta

Sports. Xiangqi — often called “elephant chess” or Chinese chess — has officially arrived in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The regional branch of the Indonesian Xiangqi Association (PEXI DIY) was formally established by the national organization at the end of October 2025, marking a new milestone for the province’s sports landscape.

PEXI DIY Seeks Guidance from Regional Leaders

To initiate its development, PEXI DIY’s leadership met with the Vice Governor of Yogyakarta, who also chairs KONI DIY. The discussion introduced Xiangqi, shared the organizational plans, and requested direction on joining KONI DIY’s official sports framework.

Introducing Xiangqi to New Audiences

Although similar to international chess, Xiangqi has distinct rules and a unique board layout. Played on a 9×10 grid with pieces placed on intersecting lines, the game emphasizes tactical movement and fast-paced strategy.

Growing Interest and Community Activity

Despite being newly established, PEXI DIY has seen growing enthusiasm among players. The organization has begun hosting weekly open training sessions to build community interest and spot potential regional talent.

Weekly Free Training — Open to All

PEXI DIY organizes free practice sessions every week at Kelenteng Poncowinatan, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. These sessions are designed to help newcomers learn the game while strengthening local participation.

Why Xiangqi Matters for Yogyakarta

The introduction of Xiangqi expands local sports options and promotes cultural enrichment. Its inclusion in KONI DIY’s official program could open opportunities for coaching, competitions, and youth engagement.
